"Handle" This

This is the first of two "rolled handles.

Today I asked Ray to instruct me how to trim the right side pitcher and give advice on how to fix the "indent boggle" on the handle of the left side pitcher AND to teach me how to make "rolled handles" since last week's "pulled handles" adventure was still too disheartening for me.
Trimming was educational and went pretty well - another LARGE learning curve op there!
To fix the handle I had to water spritz ONLY the 3 inch section of handle furthest away from the pitcher once an hour every hour. At the 3 hour mark (12:30) we checked it and it was once again soft enough to smooth out the indent. It will have to be home trimmed as the wet section of handle must dry to match the rest of the pitcher before trimming OR breakage could result.

Norm made me two more pitcher bodies to take home.

Ray instructed me how to use the 3/8th inch sticks and the rolling pin to get a "strap" of clay, trim it into an elongated wedge, round out the edges, measure the pitcher for handle size, cut the wedge to proper size specs, turn on their sides, then make handle shape and score ends.
Did you know that a handle should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch shorter than the pitcher height so you can turn it over to drain when it is washed?
NOBODY had told me this and the three clunky pitchers I had previously attempted did not follow this rule.

Then the two handles were placed on a wooden bat to carry home, to allow them to dry to "hold their shape hard". Then they were turned to rest on their attachment ends to allow full air drying. I had to periodically monitor the drying of both the handles and the pitcher bodies because the attachment window is when they are BOTH pliable, but leather hard.

Made slip, scored, trimmed and attached.
3 hours to do monitor, prep, attach and clean up for two handles!
They look good. So far so good. Hopefully they are strongly bonded.
