The Response

This memorial is in Newcastle. Its name - The Response - makes it different from many others as it shows the response from people in the North East to volunteering for military service with enthusiasm. It was commissioned by an industrialist and MP whose 5 sons all returned in one piece.

Apparently the scene depicted with the drummer at the front actually happened. The Northumberland Fusiliers 5th battalion marched from Gosforth in the North of Newcastle to Central Station headed by drummers and cheered by large crowds as they went to war. I wonder how many came back.
