Civil War and Wythenshawe Hall...

No apologies for revisiting Wythenshawe Hall today. This half-timbered house dates back to the 16th-century and has an interesting and dramatic place in English history. During the English Civil War which centred around the struggle for power between King Charles I and Parliament spilled into Manchester and a siege of Wythenshawe Hall ensued. The hall was owned by the Tatton family who sided with the King and was besieged by Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarian troops. The bitter struggle lasted from November 1643 to February 1644. The hall was finally taken by storm after two cannon were brought from Manchester. Eventually the hall was returned to the family two years later after they paid a substantial fine. A controversial statue of Oliver Cromwell today stands in the grounds of Wythenshawe Park opposite the hall.
