Under 230 year old stairs

Every now and then one of us clears out under the stairs (he'd say he does it more often than me and he'd be right) and today was that day for me. This is evidence of my hard work and a view of the construction of the stairs ... narrow bits of wood nailed to bigger bits of wood and limewashed. Every time someone comes down the stairs heavily bits of the limewash fall off.
