St Mary's Holm Oak

This afternoon the sun decided to make a rare appearance as I was walking through the Quadrangle of St Mary's College in the University of St Andrews.
This magnificent tree dominates the quad and is the largest of its kind in Scotland thought to have been planted around 1740.
At this time of year all the trees around are showing their Autumn colours and leaves are covering the ground . Not being an expert on trees I have often wondered what kind of tree this is but a quick Google search tells me it is a Holm Oak which is an evergreen broadleaf tree. When many of the other trees have shed all their leaves this tree will stand proudly with all its green leaves keeping an eye on the students and learned people passing by as it has done for generations.
