East meets West in an enlightened way

Heading along from Queen St station to a meeting in Duke St in the East End, I was hoping to find a nice wee cafe to grab a quick lunch. Hmmm, Pizza Hut, Roland Butter, Tesco metro...Nothing was quite what I was hoping for. As I crossed the High St, I was resigned to going hungry. Suddenly though, I saw a little bay tree and a couple of chairs, set on the pavement on Duke St. It was a little oasis of a cafe, the sort of place that one would find amongst the chichi West End of Glasgow.

It's called McCune Smith, and not only did it feed me well, but it educated me too. It's not named after the owners, but after the first African American to gain a medical degree, which he did in Glasgow. .

The sandwiches in the cafe are named after leading figures in the Scottish Enlightenment. They are very tasty!

If you find yourself wandering anywhere near Duke St, do pay it a visit.
