The Kelpies, Andy Scott Sculpture

My cousin and I took a drive up to Falkirk area to try and capture these ( yet unfinished) sculptures, searching google maps ( as it was way after midnight) only to find that it's all locked up and signs saying it's a construction site, do we give up & go home! Or take a leaf out of our fellow hometown man ( David Livingstone) and search for a way in... Well after trekking about 30 minutes in the dark with only the moonlight to guid our path, we stumbled across the Canal and got to within a few hundred yards of these beauties... Awesome sight and Can't wait till it's open to the public so we can get a closer look! :-)

Useful information:

The Kelpies tower a colossal 30 metres above the Forth & Clyde canal and form a dramatic gateway to the canal entrance on the East Coast of Scotland. Sculpted by Andy Scott, The Kelpies are a monument to horse powered heritage across Central Scotland.
An Icon is Born
Summer 2013 saw The Kelpies begin to take shape at the Helix, Falkirk. Rising out of the ground in a feat of remarkable engineering ingenuity, The Kelpies construction has been a stunning process to observe. From week to week progress has been amazing, and we have been tracking, capturing and sharing that progress with you on our social media networks and here on the Helix Website. Follow their progress as this stunning artwork takes shape.

The Kelpies
Each of The Kelpies will stand up to 30 metres tall and each one weighs over 300 tonnes.

The two massive horses' heads will be positioned either side of a specially constructed canal lock and basin - part of The Kelpies Hub.

The sculptor's 1:10 scale models, known as maquettes, have been displayed locally and across Scotland at events and locations as diverse as Edinburgh International Airport, the Field Museum in Grant Park, Chicago, The Falkirk Wheel, Expo 2011 (Aberdeen), Expo 2012 (Edinburgh) and Expo 2013 (Glasgow), BBC Scotland Headquarters, Glasgow and Sheffield International Steel Celebration. They are touring Scotland and America simultaneously, with recent locations including Edinburgh, Dundee, Perth and Purdue University, Illinois.

We were very proud that The Kelpies were the only European sculptures selected for exhibition at the prestigious Chicago Sculpture International in the USA.

Andy Scott
Sculptor Andy Scott created the famous Heavy Horse sculpture on the M8 in Glasgow, and has created public art at home and internationally.
