SPEED KINGS

As the Great Gathering Two takes place at the National Railway Museum in York, UK – here is my previous blip - this image shows the modern-day railway line around the village of Little Bytham, Lincolnshire.

This is the spot, on a slight downhill incline, where Mallard created a new world speed record on 3rd July 1938. What happened soon after this is now emerging – apparently the engine was so exhausted that several bearings broke and this magnificent engine had to be nursed home very carefully to complete the journey.
Villagers are trying to create a Mallard Museum on the site of the old village station. Thanks to the local postman who pointed me in the right direction. The image shows one of the many high-speed trains that frequently use this line and the electrical overhead wires that now cover the railway lines.
