Raleigh Country

The Sir Walter Raleigh pub in East Budleigh. We walked through the village on a long walk from Woodbury Castle, also visiting Otterton, and Colaton Raleigh. Sir Walter Raleigh was born in East Budleigh at Hayes Barton, a private house a mile to the west of the village.

In 2006 a life-size bronze statue of Raleigh by sculptor Vivien Mallock was unveiled by the Duke of Kent and is positioned at the top of the village close to the church. The cost of £30,000 was met by British American Tobacco.

Sir Walter Raleigh brought back potatoes and tobacco from the new world. It's been a potato weekend
