Special relationship

Tonight I was asked along to a reception in Edinburgh to welcome the new US Ambassador for the UK Matthew Barzun. He was one of the founders of CNET and spearheaded Obama's fundraising.

He spoke about how the relationship between Scotland and the US is like the process of making whisky and emphasised our special relationship is stronger than ever.

I was there as part of a Saltire Foundation group - me and 5 others from the scholar programme. It's tough in 4th year of Uni with job applications and dissertation to do. Was great to find out what they're doing and hear their ambitions for after graduating.

When I got a chance to meet Matthew, he asked me how I found my experience of being in Boston (he's originally from Massachusetts) and asked us what the Scottish music scene is like 'none of the old stuff' he said, 'like bands who play the Barrowlands', turns out he's a big Belle and Sabastian fan...
