The Old Leyland Reservoir.

This is the oldest and last remaining brick built vaulted reservoir in this area.
Situated in Clayton-le-Woods this underground water storage facility was built in 1884 and has been unused for some time. It could hold 300,000 gallons of water.
The Chorley Historical & Archeological Society was unable to raise enough funds to preserve it, as it was not considered to be sufficiently unique.
The society and the developer who bought the site wanted to incorporate the underground building within the housing development that is taking place, but funds were not forthcoming.
The reservoir has been opened to the public for two weeks to allow viewing.
