Leeds City Museum
Leeds City Museum started life as a museum in 1819, thanks to the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society. In 1821 it opened to the public and was handed over to L eeds Corporation in 1941. During WW11 it suffered considerable bomb damage and was closed in 1965, with exhibits going into other venues where they became available on an ‘appointment-to-view’ arrangement. In 2004 Leeds City Council was awarded National Lottery cash, and the museum was finally reopened in 2008. The museum presents outstanding displays in six galleries on several floors and frequently hosts travelling temporary exhibits from other museums.
