View from the Coop
I'm standing in the chicken run, the coop is behind me. The run is totally fenced: top, sides, and even with fencing buried into the ground to keep hungry critters (like raccoons) away from our three hens. They spend their days in the run where we put kitchen scraps and yard debris. The manure they add all day long is so quickly incorporated you never see it. Most amazing.
A couple times a year we harvest it ending up with so much lovely, lovely compost. First I push all the uncomposted material to one end and then dig down a foot or two to remove all the compost, then recover the entire run with all that uncomposted plant material. Shoveling out the chicken run is always one of my favorite tasks. It's so pleasant with trees overhead and it smells great. The hens aren't as happy, as they're confined inside the coop so they can't get underfoot or escape into the garden, and spend the time grumbling to me.
