Hello Berlin! (#3)
Another busy day in the city...
We decided to go to a highly recommended cafe for our brunch today... got back on the tourist bus and got off mid-Tiergarten, walked through the garden for a short while (looking beautiful as the leaves are turning), and tried really hard to find the cafe. It wasn't exactly where we thought it might have been, and when we got there, slightly sore of foot, there were no tables to be had and a queue stretching out the door. So we strolled on and found another cafe just up the road, small, alternative, plenty of seats, lovely looking cakes - well, it couldn't have been better for us.
We then strolled back through the Tiergarten and back on the tourist bus all the way out to Charlottenburg and along Kurfurstendamm. We got off at Postdamer Platz and got the S-bahn to Schoneburg, because that's apparently a very cool place to hang out. But then we found that Schoneburg station isn't really in Schoneburg, so we walked around (saw the town hall where Kennedy said he was a doughnut) and found our way to another nice sounding cafe (thank goodness for google maps!) that wasn't open on Sundays at all. So we mooched a little then got the S-bahn to nearly Charlottenburg. We'd seen an advert for a concert at Wilde Oscar, a cafe/bar/venue in a gay housing project, and thought we'd like to go.
We got there very early as our afternoon cafe had not happened, and they were runnign through the soundcheck and weren't ready to sell tickets. But they were more than happy for us to sit in the cafe and drink (sparkling rhubarb - mmm!), and then to order dinner. Then the concert started, and it was great. UrbanOpera - a bunch of professional opera singers singing popular songs from opera, jazz, blues and pop - everything from O Mio Bambino Caro to Fever to the Tennessee Waltz. It was a perfect evening.
