Wood, Cream and Sugar
Today we had brunch at a new (just opened yesterday) restaurant in the village of Quidi Vidi. Mallard Cottage is located in a restored 18th century Irish cottage. They offer original dishes incorporating traditional Newfoundland ingredients.
We have followed the progress of the cottage's restoration and expansion with interest. And have been looking forward to the restaurant's opening since taking advantage of a pop-up dining event last December.
The decor features lots of simply finished wood to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. There is an emphasis on handmade craftsmanship: in the original building, the restoration and the new dining room and kitchen.
The table settings reflect this combination of artisans past and present made familiar through daily use and enjoyment. The silver cream and sugar might be antiques but they have not been polished or re-finished. The hand cast ceramic mugs are locally made and the used cutlery is comfortably worn.
We had a lovely meal, met and congratulated the owners and look forward to our next visit.
