Failed invasion from Cumberland!

We spent the morning avoiding the low cloud in England and ended up at the amazing Hermitage Castle. Unfortunately it closed to the public at the end of September. Undeterred we climbed over the locked gate (Chloe climbed though the bars) and walked up to the castle. Look at it! It is solid walls on every side except for a small wooden door no larger than the front door of a normal house. Was it locked? Yes. Did we get in? Not a hope. They knew how to build a castle in the 'Debatable Lands' so we will just have to return in the summer.
However we did find a pleasant spot for our lunch in the ruined chapel from which I took this shot - which also shows how desolate the surrounding area is.
