Sunday Afternoon at the Park
Between the river
and the canal, acres of
nature for us all.

West Wetlands Park is about 110 acres on the northwest edge of Yuma. It was a landfill for some 50 years. Great efforts by volunteers and many grants have reclaimed portions of it. Invasive plant species have been beaten back. Native plants have been restored. The park provides a location for many events and activities. The grounds are maintained by the city of Yuma. Areas have been established to encourage burrowing owls and hummingbirds. A large playground provides for the children. There are walkways and ramadas. Today, the area around the pond was very busy. I noticed a large gathering was set up with banquet tables. Another group was holding some kind of service under a ramada. Two people were fishing in the pond. Some plants are in bloom. The Arizona Yellow Bell was particularly lovely today. I did see some humming birds, but they weren't cooperating for photos today. :(
