HOODIA SPECIES
Seen on my morning walk, I had to rush back for my camera. I was intrigued by the fluffy seeds and the sharp pointed pod containing the seeds.
These plants were used by the bushmen and Khoi shepherds as appetite and thirst suppressants. They were enjoyed after the rains when no doubt they were more succulent. Once the spikes were peeled off the remainder was rather like a cucumber, but probably a bit slimy (mucilaginous). Rather bitter I believe!
The diet industry is VERY interested in this species of plants.
