Boer War memorial detail

This is a detail from a different war memorial at Eamont Bridge near Penrith. The monument was raised by public subscription in 1901 to commemorate 4 local men who served in the Boer War 1899 to 1902. Two were killed at Faber's Put. This was a skirmish in 1900 when a column of the British Army, containing Canadian artillery as well as 'yeomanry' from the UK were ambushed at night by the Boers. The two men remembered were part of the 27 killed. The British celebrated it as a victory as the Boers retreated; but that was what guerrilla fighters do and the British Army always put a positive spin on disasters.

I'd never heard of Faber's Put Faber's Put .

Apparently the British column stopped there for the night because the commanding officer wanted to stay overnight in a comfortable farmhouse. Little changes.
