Platform escapement
This may be of limited interest to some but every day on blip should be a learning day! This photo shows a cylinder platform escapement circa 1900. This is the essential ticking part of the clock (or in miniature form, the watch) that is at the top of the train and regulates the power output of the spring and ensures timekeeping. It performs the same function as a pendulum. It could be compared to a tap that feeds out water in the tank drip by drip. The length of the hairspring regulates the cadence of the balance wheel revolutions and whether the clock runs slow or fast. Both the escape and balance wheels sit in jewelled holes in the plates and cocks. The bottom of the balance wheel also has an end jewel which is in the small brass circular plate removed for cleaning. The cylinder escapement was superseded by the lever escapement which was far more reliable and accurate. There we are; now you know!
