O wise versatile monarch
"The pavement keep dry" (check the bigger version if you don't believe me)
The Queen Victoria fountain was installed in 1901 to commemorate her regal visit the previous year.
She was therefore responsible for at least one useful erection, since her yodaesque words of wisdom were cast in iron.
It has been estimated that 0.0057 fatal injuries from falls on wet pavement were prevented in the Dun Laoghaire since 1901, thanks to that well-heeded warning.
It's a pity that other monuments erected in her honour have not survived the test of time:
- the Victorian bus stop on George's street with the inscription "your milk spill not"
- the white marble portaloo at the start of the west pier with the "your toe nails cut regularly" useful advice
- and the boat shed on Bullock harbour with the famous words "a condom reuse not"
