Bird of Paradise flower
This fine specimen of Strelitzia is in Funchal Botanical Gardens - where we spent a few hours today - surrounded by beautiful gardens and stunning views across the city and the harbour.
Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants, native to South Africa. The common name is because of a supposed resemblance to the bird of paradise.
In South Africa it is commonly known as "crane flower" and is featured on the reverse of the 50 cent coin.
