The pianist
When talented teenage pianist Sophie Smith heard that a close family friend had been diagnosed with breast cancer, she knew she had to do something.
Sophie, 13, from St Thomas, the younger daughter of Rupert and Rachel Smith whose sister is Katharine, 14, decided the best idea would be to stage a concert.
The West Exe student had been studying piano with Laura Hutchings for seven years and writes her own songs and as well as playing and singing.
Her chosen charity was Macmillan Cancer Support and held the concert, with the support of her friend Anna on cello, at the Sylvania Community Hall, Stoke Hill.
Said prod father Rupert: “It was a great success and Friends Provident, for whom I work, matched the amount raised as its charity is Macmillan.
“In all it raised £760, which is remarkable - Sophie was only thinking it might be around £100 so she was delighted as well as surprised.”
