Loco - 'Dwight D. Eisenhower'
Loco no. 60008 (1937-63), ‘Dwight D. Eisenhower’, is one of the line-up of the only six surviving A4 steam locomotives designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and which are currently celebrating the 75th anniversary of one of their number, Mallard, breaking of the world steam record. ‘Dwight D. Eisenhower’ is owned and based at the National Railroad Museum, Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA where it is on static display liveried in BR green. This loco was originally built as no. 4496 Golden Shuttle for the West Riding (Yorkshire, UK) streamliner service.
In my aim to obtain and blip a photograph of each of the six locos in the line-up, this is number five. Only one more to go and I’ll have the set! After ‘The Great Gathering’ ends on 11tn November and Sir Nigel Gresley, Union of South Africa and Bittern move out, ‘Dwight D. Eisenhower’, along with Mallard and Dominion of Canada, will remain on display until late January /early February prior to moving to the National Rail Museum’s depot at Shildon, and subsequent return to the USA. All six locos will again be together on display 15-23 February 2014 at Shildon, before the repatriated locomotives return to their home museums in late spring/early summer 2014.
