Uniform.
It's fresher's week in Dundee and there are students everywhere. Most of them are also trying to cut a bit of an image for themselves. Have to be seen to be cool after all! I suspect that this is what this lad was trying to do too. The uniform is, one rugby shirt (preferably Scottish), one pair of thick woolly socks even if it is hot, one pair of very well worn hiking boots, a kilt and some kind of symbol of resistance such as the bracelets worn here. Very "cool" on campus and very, very "true" Scotsman. Wonder if he knows that the kilt, is probably an example of manufactured national identity, it was invented by an Englishman to increase work productivity (and decorum) amongst the highlanders in a wood mill and it only gained acceptance in the 1800's after George IV wore a version of it when he visited Leith docks in 1822. My guess is he doesn't - that story is not so cool.
