Poverty Rate Remains the Same

We were walking in downtown Portland to an event to honor John Van Landingham and his wife Martha Walters. John is Oregon Legal Aid's longest serving housing lawyer and Martha is a justice for the Oregon Supreme Court. A powerful couple serving the public interest in Oregon. But passing these homeless guys reminds me of a statistic announced this week: "Poverty rate remains the same." Even with wonderful folks like John and Martha, the poor persist and remind us of the fundamental inequality we live within.
