Cassette Love

Yes, I love tapes! Cassettes! Cassette Tapes! Why? Because they were special. Music was different back then and especially mixing tapes. Did you ever mix a tape for a boy? No, poor you! Never received a mixtape? Ouch!

I would like to quote one of my all time favorite book/movie quotes. Rob Gordon (in the movie played by John Cusack) in Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity:

“The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don’t wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules. [...]“

So true. Making a mixtape is something special. You can’t just jump one song back and delete it. It needs to be done with time and sure instinct. You need to think it through, before you start. Messure the time of the songs, and then the decisions: “If I take this song, there will be 1:32 seconds left? Shall I play a song half, add another song…”. I loved it.

But there is also another thing. Our kids will never be able to understand the connection between a pencil and a cassette.” Quite sad, but true! Times are like this. Do you remember the feeling you got, when you recognize the player is eating your tape? Remember “tape jam”? Well, we don’t have these problems anymore.

I love my collection of tapes. Yes I have most of these on CD now, and rarely get them down to look at, let alone play but I wouldn't part with them. There are some classics in there....go on, look closely....you know you want to!
