The King's Map

I had a nice walk today, all around the city bowl--through Higgovale, Oranjezicht, Vredehoek, Gardens, Tamboerskloof and home. I stopped into the South African Museum to look for the telescope used by the first Astronomer Royal at the Cape (a guy with the great name of Fearon Fallows), but I found that it has been moved to the Observatory, fittingly enough. Instead, I stumbled on the remnants of an exhibition on François Le Vaillant's map of Southern Africa, based on his travels here between 1781 and 1784. This is a replica of the map, printed on the floor. Afterwards, I checked out the site of the first observatory of the Astronomer Royal, at the bottom of Kloof Street.
