11th November

This is a picture of my Grandad who served during World War 2.

He enlisted in the Army on the first day that war was declared, and served throughout the war until 1946 when he was de-commissioned.

He arrived on the Normandy beaches on June the 9th as a member of a reconnaissance unit and spent the rest of the war fighting though France, Belgium and Holland.

3 times he woke up in hospital; 3 times he got up from his bed and went back to the front line.

He never spoke of the horrors he must have witnessed, but he would speak of some of the lesser incidents and one or two of the funnies! One story goes like this'

"One day I was driving along into a field when the sergeant shouted"

"Could you please stop the vehicle, we have entered a mine field!"

"Well" he would continue with a wry smile "he said something like that!" I can only guess.

As he fought across Europe two objects stayed with him thought out. His bible and his rosary beads, and by Gods grace he came home.

He died about twenty years ago but today seemed a fitting day to remember him.

My Grandad came home, many didn't. They paid the price that allows me today to practice my faith in total freedom, and place these words here without worry of retribution!

For all those who served and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, thank you.

We will Remember.
