Third Year Abroad

By LittleLots

Actually managed to get myself up at a decent time on Sunday to try out the marked in Plaza de Toros. Don't think I've ever actually heard the bells ringing for church here before... Generally speaking I've always considered markets to be a morning thing so thought 10:30 would be a decent time. But apparently in Andalucia things happen a little more slowly, and by the time we got there they still seemed to be setting up. Should have just stayed in bed. So after a brief wander, Amanda and I ended up going to the one 'big' park in Granada - el Parque Federico Garcia Lorca, so named due to it being where the Lorca family's summer house was located. The house is still there and has been turned into a small museum where they have guided tours every half an hour. As the tour only costs a euro for students we thought we may as well do it although there really isn't much to see. All the furniture has been left intact and there were a few old photographs which were interesting to see, somehow made the Spanish author seem more real. To be honest the coolest thing they have in there is actually an original Dali sketch that the painter gave to Lorca as a sign of their friendship. The park itself isn't the nicest in the world, although as I said its really the only area in Granada you can consider a park, everything is so arid here! Even inside the park there are very few areas of actual grass.

After a bit of a wander we headed to Montaditos, a restaurant that I thought was very much a Madrid thing but turns out we have one here too. Officially called 100 Montaditos, the menu essentially consists of a hundred different mini sandwiches (montaditos) and on Sundays and Wednesdays everything is a euro, including the jarras (big glass) of tinto de verano. So we couldn't have picked a better day to come. Probably one of my favourite things there are the dessert sandwiches made with a chocolate pastry bread, chocolate cream and oreos. They are dangerously good. So good that after a couple of hours watching Spanish tv we were drawn back just to get another one. Well, when its only a euro you just can't refuse really...
