Blue skies and a history lesson!
A beautiful blue sky day!
Spent the morning going through the difficult process of starting to clear my Uncle's flat. It's amazing how much one tiny flat can hold! The afternoon and evening were then spent sorting through all the bits and pieces we'd brought home, and working out how to get it to various charities. And there's probably another two or three day's worth of clearing still do be done.
My Uncle has a flat in Colstons Almhouses, which were built in 1691 by the Bristol philanthropist Edward Colston, who made his fortune from the slave trade. The clock and belfry mark its barrel-vaulted chapel. It was founded for the poor, and the 12 men and 12 women residents had to be Bristol-born and attend the chapel regularly. It still provides a home for the elderly, and is run by the Society of Merchant Venturers. If you want to see a photo of the entire Almshouse Courtyard, see here for my earlier blip.
(Thank you to everyone who left kind and supportive messages yesterday, they were very much appreciated. Sorry I'm still a day behind with my blips but I just seem to be chasing my tail at the moment, and have to grab a free moment when I can, like now, just before I head off down to Devon for the funeral of another Uncle. I hope to have caught up with myself, and my blips by the weekend.)
