Siem Reap

Most tourists only spend a few days in Siem Reap, which is enough to do the main temples, but we had a whole week there and were able to see more of Cambodia. The city of Siem Reap has swollen to almost one million in the last couple of decades thanks to the temple-related tourist industry but in the centre still feels like a fairly small town with no high-rise buildings. Apart from the traffic, it's a quiet town where people get up early, work hard, and sling up hammocks to sleep in when it gets hot. The active temples in the town (as opposed to the old ones at Angkor and elsewhere) aren't on most tourists' route and are a good place to find some peace and quiet.
