When we bought our house, a lot of the original features had been removed, including the banisters and banister rail, and the newel post had been chopped right down.

Moving back from Brazil this time, we got round to replacing them - feels a lot safer. I wanted hearts, so M made the wider banisters from boards, and cut out the hearts, then I painted the insides red. And don't tell anyone, but the newel has a removable top and a hollow inside so we can hide...who knows??

Love it, especially when the sun pours down the stairs like it was doing this morning.
