Stinking Iris - Iris foetidissima
A few years ago now, my friend Liz gave me a clump of stinking Iris from her garden.
This beautiful native iris is often overlooked as it has fairly inconspicuous dull buff yellow flowers tinged with blue, a far cry from it's more showy cousins. However in autumn it has the most amazing green seed pods which split to display the most wonderful crimson seeds which last long into the depths of winter and look especially stunning in the snow.
It gets it's name from the fact that it gives off an unpleasant smell if crushed.
Today's blip is some of the beautiful seed pods and seeds which were really brightening up my garden today....thank you Liz!
