Cairo Khan el Khalili Market
'Welcome to Egypt!' was the greeting which met us on every corner as we walked around Khan el Khalili market at dusk today. We decided to go to 'the other side' of the market this time. A good decision. We passed all sorts: live rabbits, live chickens, elaborate bhurkas, scented oils, fruit and veg, hot milky tea in glasses, Turkish coffee, gold and silver, furry toys, blingy bedding and colourful rugs. We were on a mission though, and looking for trainers for Yasheen. We found him yesterday (on our way to the church bazaar) in one of his two usual spots and measured his feet with a key ring measuring tape. I just wasn't sure that Bb's measuring was accurate enough.......'about the size of one of the street tiles in the photo'! So, we knew his feet measured 24 centimeters, which turned out to be a size 42. At last we found the shoe area and hummed and hawed over styles and colours and chose a suitably trendy, coloured pair. I hope he likes them and that they fit! They'll be handed over before we leave.
Decided to stay down in the centre for dinner and headed to Cafe Riche, where we've eaten before. We weren't disappointed and enjoyed baba ganoush, Egyptian pickles and soft, warm Egyptian bread to start. Then Bb had quails, while I had fried chicken. All delicious and such good value for money!
My blip's in Khan el Khalili. We must have wandered around for a couple of hours and only saw one other tourist. It felt fine and safe and the only time my heart skipped a beat was when the little narrow street we were in had a power cut!
