Pepysman

A Long Time Ago

Not much of a blip tonight, just the book I am currently reading. It is an account of the campaign in Macedonia during the First World War which is probably still little known today. For much of the time the allied armies did little but hold the front line- no easy task given the mountainous terrain and the prevalence of malaria in the flat lands, hence Clemenceau's gibe that they were the "gardeners of Salonika".

It is a sobering thought that as many years separate the events and the publication of the book as separate the book's publication from today.
