Anna's Hummingbird
Check out the cute, chubby hummer at the first of two of my back blips.
Aptly named for its spectacular plumage, the Magnificent Hummingbird is one of several hummingbird species found in southeast Arizona but not regularly elsewhere in the United States. It can migrate to Mexico but is found in natural habitats as far south as Panama.
The species ranges from 11–14 cm (4.3–5.5 in) in length. Of the hummingbirds found in the United States, the Magnificent Hummingbird is one of the two largest species.
I was surprised that there was still a hummingbird feeder still hanging at the wildlife area in Madera Canyon. When I inquired, I was told that they had all been taken down a month ago.
But our weather has been so mild that these hummers had been spotted. They can tolerate the cold (nights) better than all of the others, most of which have migrated, so they put out a feeder for them.
Edit: Anna's hummingbirds often stay the winter in Arizona. Since it has been unseasonably warm, they are still in the higher elevation. However, it will soon be too cold for them at 5000' and they will migrate to the valley, to where my feeder is located, at about 2900 feet. That's about the maximum they will tolerate for the winter months. I'm lucky I make the cut!
