In fact, there is something about the clean sharp-cut brilliance of Dumfries not unlike some of the newer French towns — or even one of the more frequented suburbs of Paris." 100+ years later, Dumfries is nothing like that.
Peebles, on the other hand, does sometimes feel French to me - the hills, the expansive lightness could be a town in the Luberon.
