AxME

Sun shined only about 5 minutes in the morning right after sunrise and I'm glad that I happened to go for a morning walk with sami just then. Some wet snowberries in the picture.

Today I went to see Ellen Gallagher's exhibition in Sara Hildén Art Museum with my dear artist friends. I really liked the exhibition, it was very interesting and very different.

Ellen Gallagher (born 1965) is one of the most acclaimed contemporary artists to have emerged from North America since the mid-1990s. This is her first exhibition in Finland.

The exhibition consists of paintings, washes and paper cutouts. Her subjects are the difficult past of the African- American people, popular culture, fashion, customs and the special quality of the vernacular language. Gallagher’s art is characterized by layering, an inventive use of materials and a multi-dimensional structure.

The name of the exhibition AxME is a play on words, referring to the history and vernacular speech (”Ask me”) of the black population of the United States. The exhibition has been assembled in close cooperation with the artist by the Tate Modern in London, from where it has come to Tampere and will then move on to Haus der Kunst in Munich.

Doors of Sara Hildén Art Museum were enlarged because of the largest works of Gallagher.

After the exhibition we had a dinner at Bistro LePot.
