Playing life by ear.

Ventotene

Ventotene island is a wild and beautiful little island and the second nearest one to us.
The shot is taken at the entrance to the Roman port which was dug out of sandstone speacially, so they say, for an emporer's saucy daughter , Julia, to keep her out of trouble. Remains of her villa are still to be seen here.

The first time we arrived here at night in bad weather, in about 1989 there was no lighting.

It was the scariest experience as the entrance is very tight and then turns at a 90° angle and you have to make a snap decision that doesn't seem to make any sense.

Lucky for us, Humpy knew what he was doing and all went well.

It was the most amazing experience in the port itself, as all was so peaceful and I climbed up the rock in holes carved out two thousand years ago and tied our ropes round an ancient bollard. (Ilove the word bollard)

Then we all have a lovely dinner in the boat..... Happy memories.
