Work at home - as a dyer of fabrics
One of our visits today was to a small block of terraced houses. Initially there was nothing remarkable to see, but we had been told that this was an area where dyeing takes place. Escaping the hordes of children, I popped into a house and was invited to the roof top where already dyed fabrics were ironed and then stencil designs were added by hand.
Everyone in the family was involved and I chose this image because of the main single colour throughout.
At street level there were vats of dye. Both men and women worked to soak the materials. Wringing out is hard work that requires a lot of strength.
We were given small samples of fabric to take away with us - all free and given with good will and many smiles.
