Colliding plates - Ice forming
Took a long lunch break today and wandered out to the coast on the outside of the island of Härnön, close to the southern tip. Took a lot of photos - swans resting up before continuing the journey south - the sea & horizon - ice covered rocks - frozen puddles and the sunset. This made it very hard to choose a blip!
However, in the end it was the photo of the new ice forming in the bays. When the weather is calm and cold the ice freezes in plates. These plates jiggle together as the water gently moves and the edges of the plates break off and refreeze to the edge. Soon each plate has a thick edge and if the sea stays calm and the weather cold these plates eventually freeze together. If the weather warms up the plates melt and if the wind gets up the plates get smashed into small pieces.
This is winter slowly moving in.
