Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum, possibly the variety "Atropurpureum," though I'm not entirely sure of that. Newly emerging leaves and flower buds.
I planted it outside the north facing kitchen window so that the light would shine through it. It gives me a lot of pleasure from spring to autumn, and in winter the spindly branches let the sunshine in.
More on the dust. Now they're saying it didn't come from Australia at all. Apparently it looked red from Christchurch, which led to that theory. It was not red on this side of the plains. It was white.
