Puffed Wheat Squares
When I was a kid, I didn't get sugar cereal. However, if I was good, I got to make this concoction out of puffed wheat, molasses and butter that was quite similar to Super Sugar Crisp (now known as Super Golden Crisp).
Anyway, it's a Canadian tradition to make these puffed wheat bars. They're very tasty, and a great alternative to Rice Crispy treats. While I've long lost my mother's recipe for these things, It was pretty easy to find one of millions of versions on the Internet.
BTW, remember how Puffed Wheat used to come in those bags and not boxes? No days, of course, it comes in a box.
Here's the recipe:
1 1/2 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. butter (1 1/2 bars)
3/4 c. Grandma's molasses or 1/4 c. blackstrap or 1/2 c. cane molasses
3/4 tbsp. cocoa
1 bag Puffed Wheat or 12 c. popcorn
Boil sugar, butter, molasses, and cocoa to 250 degrees or hard boil.
Pour over Puffed Wheat and stir.
