The 12:05 down train from Corfe Castle to Swanage
Yes, we still live in the steam age down here.
The Swanage Railway has prospered and expanded greatly over the years. Thirty years ago its length of track hardly reached beyond Swanage, today trains from London can travel down here to the seaside.
Info for railway enthusiasts.
1928: built at Armstrong Whitworth's in Newcastle
1964: withdrawn from service and sold for scrap
1979: came to Swanage
2006: now restored, pulled its first passenger train for Swanage Railway
Plenty more info is to be found on the Swanage Railway website.
Photographic notes:
The train was moving slowly into the station, but the magic of photography and a 1/640th of a second shutter speed don't help in persuading the viewer that it hadn't already come to a stop.
To add a sense of realism, I have done two things. Firstly, the wheels of the locomotive have been blurred a little, to suggest movement. Secondly, you can see the smoke coming out of the locomotive's smokestack. As it happens, I couldn't see any, so I added it in.
