From South West to -
North East. I am now in Scotland with my friend on a short pre Christmas visit.
Two odd things happened, we arrived early. Have you ever been on a train that was early?
They kept apologising for going slow as they were catching up with the train in front but regardless of that we arrived 15 mins early.
Walking up into central Edinburgh it was obvious that the place was abuzz. Lots of people, Christmas markets, skating rink and rides on Princes Street and St. Andrews Square. We thought we might be too early for all that but today was Edinburgh Light Night. The first day of the Christmas markets and the official switch on of the lights by Sir Chris Hoy followed by fireworks. George Street was closed off and there were lots of stages with school groups performing before the big switch on. We stopped to watch an excellent school pipe band after dropping off our cases.
Heading towards the Mound which was also closed off, we managed to fight our way through the Princes Street markets and up onto the Mound in time to see the Christmas tree lights go on and watch the fireworks above the Scottish National Gallery. Sadly we didn't see Chris Hoy!
Back to the markets for a mug of Gluhwein (our second) and a quick perusal of the stalls before returning to our hotel.
Such huge crowds for a few minutes excitement but a great start to our short break in Edinburgh and a good follow up to the 'White Christmassy' two days in Bristol.
Edinburgh is now in full Christmas mode - I can't imagine what this place is like at New year!
