Nuclear Lake District

Back in January of this year, a large portion of the residents of Cumbria managed to persuade the County council to vote against plans to build a nuclear repository underneath the Lake District. It was a difficult decision for them as two of the district councils wanted/want it to be built. Had it gone ahead, this nuclear waste dump would have been about the size of Carlisle, housing nuclear waste not only from the UK but from abroad. It was successfully argued, (backed up by previous UK Government reports), that the area was geologically unsound for such a project. Unbelievably, the repository is back on the agenda. Government have removed the need for County council agreement and made it possible to go ahead with district council support alone. If you care about the Lake District, please have a look at some of the information available on the web and if you feel concerned enough, let others know. www.cumbriatrust.org is a good starting point.
