There are museums in both the upper and lower Belvedere. We started at upper museum, which has Austrian art from all periods, but the Egon Schieles and the Gustav Klimts dominate the show--the latter are especially marvelous--not numerous, but superb.

There's also a small but excellent selection of medieval Austrian art at the upper museum, and at the moment it dovetails wonderfully with a show in the lower museum, on the Master of Lichtenstein Castle--an anonymous 15th century artist from Vienna. Exhibited are all surviving panels from a large altarpiece, with many related works; it was superb.

In the lower building there was also a comprehensive exhibition on the German expressionist painter Emil Nolde (1867-1956).
