I Capture the Castle

The Orford castle keep stands on a hillock, among the earth-covered remains of the outer fortifications. It has stood there for 900 years dominating the flat saltings and farmlands for miles around.

It was built by Henry II to squash the pretensions of the Bigod family - who were getting too big for their boots, bigod!

There is a lovely circular walk of five miles or so which will take you around the fields and foootpaths from Gedgrave to Sudbourne with the comforting presence of the castle always in your sight. (Particularly comforting, because the Butley Orford Oysterage lies in its shadows, and after 5 miles you are well entitled to eat there with a clear conscience)
