Midnight Sun
Over the past two nights the Victorian covered market in Preston has hosted a display of the sun using images taken by NASA, a collaboration between scientists at the University of Central Lancashire and two artists (David Henckel and Dan Wilkinson) funded by the Arts Council. Two hundred years ago the Preston astronomer Moses Holden used an orrery and magic lanterns in public lectures about the solar system. So: universities doing public education; science and art working together; and a blazing, revolving, swirling, flare-emitting sun in a dark market place at midnight in winter. What's not to like?
